Yama Onna, Kabe Onna

August 9, 2007

I figure I could talk about the current crop of dramas I’m watching. I’ll probably cover one each day or so, until I get them all out.

Yama Onna, Kabe Onna

Yama Onna, Kabe Onna is the story of Aoyagi Megumi (Itou Misaki), a saleswoman working on the first floor of a ritzy Tokyo department store. She is the ace of the company, until the company director’s pervert son (Oikawa Mitsuhiro) comes up with a plan to pump up sales. “Operation Dynamite” plans to transfer in attractive women from the company’s branch stores to the main store. The first of these transfers is Mariya Marie (Fukada Kyoko).

Mariya is an eccentric but good natured and energetic girl who was the ace of her local branch. It seems that her success is due less to her personality, and more to her enormous breasts. Mariya, naive as she is, appears completely oblivious to this fact, despite the constant gawking attention of the men around her.

Aoyagi, for her part, is annoyed by the sudden shift in attention, but finds herself becoming friends with Mariya due to her charmingly innocent nature. This is in contrast to her relationship with another saleswoman, Ooyama Haruko (Koike Eiko). Ooyama is almost as well endowed as Mariya, but much more conscious and deliberate about the use of her assets.

Of course there are the usual web of love interests. Haruko is after the pervert son, but the only woman he has any real interest in is Aoyagi. Aoyagi ignores him and seems to have a crush on the store manager (Tanihara Shosuke), but won’t act on it.

The main focus of this drama though is how much physical appearance can get a person. While at first it seems that Mariya is simply an airhead who gets by on the power of her boobs, she seems to slowly be proving that there’s more to her than mammaries. While the show abounds in crude (yet hysterical) humor, the real message seems to be the time honored moral of not judging a book by its cover. Or perhaps, to not focus on your own cover so much. I was expecting a shallow series full of laughs and little else. It’s pleasing that the show manages a little more depth than that.

The inflatable bra is still damn funny though.
